Is Iodine affecting your fertility?

Iodine is best known for its role in thyroid function. It helps the synthesis of the thyroid hormones T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine). T4 and T3 play an important role in the body's control of metabolism. Low levels of iodine intake are thought to create a cascading series of hormone changes that lead to a hyper-estrogen state, which is linked to poor ovarian, endometrial, depression and breast health.

Iodine deficiency can cause infertility in women and men. Iodine deficiency can lead to lack of ovulation, micarriage, pre-eclampsia during pregnancy, stillborn, hormonal imbalance and menstrual irregularities. If your thyroid is functioning at 10% you can have a 80% miscarriage rate. Many physicians only test your TSH (thyroidstimulating hormone) levels. But there are three thyroid tests you can do: T3, T4 and thyroid antibodies. (Iodine is a component of thyroid hormones.) Some studies show that if your thyroid isn’t working properly, it can be more difficult to get pregnant and maintain a pregnancy.

During my infertility journey, I found out I was lacking in folic acid and iodine. Are you having enough iodine?

Iodine is also extremely important to take 90 days before conception. You must take iodine before the 90 day period before conception. conception because iodine forces out toxic bromine. Therefore, bromine can substitute for iodine where the body uses iodine. This is not good because then this toxic bromine when used instead of iodine messes up the body.

When you first take iodine bro toxic bromine is forced out of the tissues and people get sick from bromine. This temporary detox reaction is blamed on iodine mistakenly. But it is not iodine that is causing the problem. It is bromine that is causing the problem.

Iodine pushing out toxic bromine can cause a rash, acne, hair falling out, emotionality, sinus draining, coughing, mouth and tongue sores, tingling in twitching hands and feet, urination, vision changes, and many other side effects. The most common side effect is vivid dreams. The most worrisome side effect is a sore thyroid. This indicates thyroid cells breaking up. The inside of the thyroid cells may induce a Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Therefore, it is extremely important to start off with small amounts of iodine and work your way up gradually. I like to start with 3 mg per day of iodine or less and increase 5 mg per day every one to two weeks. You should work your way up to 50 mg per day for three months. Then, cut back to 10 mg per day for maintenance.

we need less than one teaspoon of iodine for proper health and development. Since the body cannot store iodine, you need to eat a little bit of it every day. Excess consumption of iodine can also inhibit the synthesis of thyroid hormones, leading to hyperthyroidism, thyroid papillary cancer and iodermia.

Best sources of Iodine:

As always we prefer using food sources before supplementing.

**** Start small before using a iodine supplement and test your thyroid before. When your thyroid is in failure and you start taking kelp supplements, you can literally shut down your thyroid. So avoid kelp!**

1. Iodized Salt:

Iodized salt is the main source of iodine in our diet. Iodized salt consists of table salt combined with minuscule amounts of iodine containing salts. Just one gram of salt provides the body with 77 micrograms of iodine and 0 calories.

2. Sea Vegetables:

Sea vegetables contain excellent sources of iodine. Kelp contains the highest amount of iodine than any other food on this planet. One serving of kelp contains around 2000 micrograms of iodine while one tablespoon of arame contains 730 micrograms of iodine. Wakame is another excellent source of iodine with one tablespoon providing 80 micrograms of iodine.
Again avoid kelp.

3. Baked Potato:

Baked potatoes are another great source of iodine. A medium sized baked potato provides 60 micrograms of iodine, helping you meet 40% of the daily-recommended value. Besides, the baked potato is also rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals and potassium.

4. Codfish:

Fishes are able to extract iodine from the seawater. Cod is a delicious, moist and a low calorie fish that comes packed with several essential nutrients like omega 3 fatty acids, protein, folate, vitamin D, E and potassium. A three-ounce serving of cod provides 99 micrograms of iodine, amounting to 99% of the daily value.

5. Yogurt:

Yogurt is one of the healthiest foods to include in your daily diet. It is also an excellent option for increasing the iodine levels in your body. A cup of yogurt provides 154 micrograms of iodine and 154 calories. So, enjoy yogurt smoothie in your breakfast or combine it with berries for a light evening snack.
Ensure your yogurt contains live probiotics, I prefer Kefir - I do not drink milk due to cysts but I do consume organic 1% kefir or kombucha due to it's high probiotic content.

6. Lobster:

A serving of lobster daily can prevent you from iodine deficiencies. A 100 grams serving of lobster provides 100 micrograms of this essential mineral, around 67% of the daily value. Moreover, lobsters are quite low in fat content, making them a perfect choice for health conscious people. Lower cholesterol levels in lobsters help to maintain the triglyceride levels, thereby keeping the heart healthy. Lobsters are also rich in omega 3 fatty acids.

7. Cranberries:

This bright colored fruit provides a plethora of health benefits. It contains high concentrations of vitamin C, K, B, antioxidants and fiber. This fruit is an amazing source of iodine as well. Four ounces of cranberries provide 400 micrograms of iodine, equaling to 267% of the daily value. Cranberry is also renowned for its positive effects on urinary tract infection. The fruit is low in calories as well. While purchasing packaged juice, be aware of its sugar content.

8. Green Beans:

A half-cup serving of green beans can help you meet 2% of the daily value of iodine. Green beans are a great source of folate, vitamin B, C, protein and potassium as well. It provides nearly 40% of the daily value of folate and 53% of the daily value of fiber, which protects the colon and flushes the amount of toxins from it.

Tips to Optimize the Iodine Levels Naturally:

  • Try to purchase as much organic food as possible. Wash all the fruits and vegetables thoroughly to clear the pesticides and other chemicals.
  • Avoid eating and drinking from plastic containers.
  • Avoid soda and aerated drinks. Drink, pure filtered water instead.
  • Your personal care products should be as chemical free as possible.
Will you include these iodine rich food sources to have sufficient levels of iodine in the body system?

Lastly, before taking supplements get tested by your doctor to avoid taking dangerous levels of iodine supplement.

PCOS Natural ways treatment to help and improve fertility

I woke up on my bed screaming in pain could barely walk, my husband carried me from the stairs and called the ER. Got checked and he said it might be PID "pelvic inflammatory disease" usually caused by untreated BV. He wasn't for sure but will send me down for ultrasound tests and more intensive scans. Here I was being scanned and the ultrasound lady said to me "Wow you have so many cysts around your ovaries uterus, somehow they got up in your body seems like they got busted and causing you severe inflammation. Also I see you have  a retroverted uterus -  tipped and causes infertility. I'm not saying you can never get pregnant but it does cause infertility in some women."

That was the worst fear I ever had like my wall was shattered to pieces. I just lost my job, depressed and sad. Now this just made my infertility struggle much worse. It has been 7 years since my diagnosis and I have been blessed with 2 kids. If you are reading this and suffering with PCOS, don't give up, you will conceive and conquer PCOS.

So what is PCOS? Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), also known as polycystic ovarian syndrome, is a common health problem caused by an imbalance of reproductive hormones. The hormonal imbalance creates problems in the ovaries. The ovaries make the egg that is released each month as part of a healthy menstrual cycle. With PCOS, the egg may not develop as it should or it may not be released during ovulation as it should be. Basically your body is producing more testosterone than it should.

Some of the symptoms of PCOS include:
  • Irregular menstrual cycle. Women with PCOS may miss periods or have fewer periods (fewer than eight in a year). Or, their periods may come every 21 days or more often. Some women with PCOS stop having menstrual periods.
  • Too much hair on the face, chin, or parts of the body where men usually have hair. This is called "hirsutism." Hirsutism affects up to 70% of women with PCOS.
  • Acne on the face, chest, and upper back
  • Thinning hair or hair loss on the scalp; male-pattern baldness
  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight due to insulin resistance
  • Darkening of skin, particularly along neck creases, in the groin, and underneath breasts
  • Skin tags, which are small excess flaps of skin in the armpits or neck area
  • . Many women with PCOS report increased fatigue and low energy. Related issues such as poor sleep may contribute to the feeling of fatigue.
  • . Having PCOS can increase the likelihood of mood swings, depression, and anxiety.Mood changes
  • Sleep problems. Women with PCOS often report problems such as insomnia or poor sleep. There are many factors that can affect sleep, but PCOS has been linked to a sleep disorder called sleep apnea.  With sleep apnea, a person will stop breathing for short periods of time during sleep.
  • Headaches. Hormonal changes prompt headaches.
  • . Pelvic pain may occur with periods, along with heavy bleeding. It may also occur when a woman isn’t bleeding.Pelvic pain

MEDICAL TREATMENTS:

Metformin - Although metformin is not approved by the FDA for treatment of PCOS, many doctors prescribe it for PCOS patients. Metformin is a medicine that makes the body more sensitive to insulin. This can help lower elevated blood glucose levels, insulin levels, and androgen levels. People who use metformin may lose some weight as well. Metformin can improve menstrual patterns, but metformin doesn’t help as much for unwanted excess hair.

Many women who are diagnosed with PCOS are often automatically prescribed metformin. However, it's important to have a reason for taking metformin and not be on it just because of a diagnosis of PCOS. Discuss with your doctor the reason why you are taking metformin and whether it is providing a benefit to you.

Clomid -  Clomid (clomiphene citrate or Serophene) is an oral medication that is commonly used for the treatment of infertility. It is often given to try to induce ovulation in women that do not develop and release an egg (ovulate) on their own. Women who do not ovulate (without drugs) are said to have a condition called anovulation. The most common cause of anovulation is PCOS.

Femara - Femara (generic name is letrozole) is an oral drug which can be an effective fertility treatment for women with ovulation problems, or for those with unexplained infertility.
This medication is in a class of drug called aromatase inhibitors. Femara has mainly been used to treat certain cases of breast cancer.
Femara is a great alternative for those who tried clomid and they did not conceive or unpleasant side effects.  However, Many physicians will not prescribe letrozole because of concerns from a 2005 report from some Canadian fertility doctors suggesting a possible higher incidence of birth defects in pregnancies from using letrozole.

Injectables - Injectable FSH hormone products are often referred to as injectable gonadotropins or "injectables". Fertility patients with PCOS have usually tried treatment with oral medications as a first-line therapy, and if that is not successful, moving on to injections is an option US brand names for injectables include Follistim, Gonal-F, Repronex, Bravelle, and Menopur. However, because of the high risk for multiple births, particularly the risk of triplets and higher, injectables for PCOS is being used less often.

  • Over 90% of women with infertility and PCOS will be able to develop mature follicles and ovulate with injectables
  • However, the pregnancy success rate is only about 20% per month
  • Injectables and then sex at the time of ovulation is more fun, but injectables plus IUI
  • After 3 months have been tried and failed - the success rate with continuing injectables is quite a bit lower.

  • NATURAL TREATMENTS:

Upon my diagnosis, I read a book called "The infertility cure; the ancient Chinese wellness program.." I only adapted her diet recommendation and tips but omitted most Chinese things because I focused on meditating bible scriptures on fruitfulness.

    1. Stop drinking cows milk! No cheese, yogurts and creams made with cows milk. Yes as soon as I stopped I experienced less bloating and pain during my cycle. I switched to almond milk and coconut milk best decision I ever made. I still take ice cream occasionally though 😊 .

    2. Say goodbye to white carbs and switch to whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, teff, spelt etc. I stopped wheat, white rice, starchy foods and started brown rice. I stopped drinking sodas, juices and sugary drinks. Switch to gluten free foods if you can. Eat green veggies, healthy fats like avocados, nuts, organic fruits(1-2  fruit a day or 1 cup of fruit juice a day!) No greasy foods or junk foods and no alcohol. Drink enough water daily spring water.

    3. In her book she explained how some women who are always cold need to add warming spices to their foods, drink more soups, teas, cut back on cold foods, stop eating ice and icy drinks. Warming spices include cinnamon, cloves, a little bit of cayenne all which will enable blood to flow freely and encourage ovulation. In Chinese medicine, they use cinnamon bark (the spice) to warm the interior and nourish yang energy, which must be abundant for fertility.

    4. STOP TAKING SOY! Yes I stopped anything with soy in it including popular Chinese foods. The truth is most soy in America is not organic and full of gmo.

    5. DETOXIFICATION -
Detoxifying the body is necessary especially to balance the hormones. You detoxify and then increase blood supply to the ovaries with herbs and foods. The top foods for detoxification are - Dandelion, burdock root (find the root in most Asian grocery stores), basil, ginger and cinnamon. Make a soup with healthy veggies and add those items into your soup.

You can also purchase the detox tea I take here use code SAVE10 to save 10% off. Dandelion tea can also be purchased at target, amazon or vitacost. Start slowly with detox for once  a week to see how your body responds. Then try twice or 3 times a week. And then every day for 5-7 days. Also check with your doctor before starting any detox especially when taking any medication.

    6. OMEGA 3 - This made a significant boost. I started eating wild salmon and raw smoked salmon to reduce inflammation in my body.

    7. DO NOT EAT RAW VEGGIES - Steam your vegetables and do not eat them raw - all greens, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, collards,  mustard greens, carrots, parsnips, rutabaga, turnips, sweet potatoes. Also do not juice them rather lightly steam. Once I started doing that I felt way better.

    8. EMOTIONS:  According to TCM, two of the most common organ systems addressed in fertility are the liver and the lungs. The liver is related to anger, frustration, stress, and desire. So, it’s no wonder why one of the most common TCM diagnoses for infertility is Liver Qi stagnation. The lungs are related to sadness, grief, and holding on. How to get the fertility “chi” flowing? Make sure to find time to calm your mind through meditation. I love reading biblical scriptures and positive thinking. So see your PCOS going away and trust God to see you through. Get a massage, take adequate walks, get moving! Learn how to mentally de stress.

    9. CHART: Charting your basal body temperature can help you determine when you’re ovulating, whether ovulation occurs on the optimal day and if your body is at a temperature conducive for fertility. They are great apps now such as Kindara, Fertility friend, Natural Cycles and Clue help with charting on your phone to determine ovulation.

    10. WOMENS MASSAGE:

You want to massage the lower part of your belly button lightly anti clockwise including the sides. From where you see the tip of her thumb to the lower parts where her fingers are all that area.

    Fertility Massage and Menstrual Cycle

The average length of female menstrual cycle is about 28-30 days.
These entire duration can be divided into four phases which are highlighted below:
    1. Menstrual phase (From day 1 to 5)
    2. Follicular phase (From day 1 to 13)
    3. Ovulation phase (Day 14)
    4. Luteal phase (From day 15 to 28)
For women Trying to Conceive,   Fertility massage should not be done during the luteal phaseThis is to avoid the risk of miscarriage incase implantation occurs immediately after ovulation.
The best time for a fertility massage is after the menstrual phase till ovulation phase (From day 6 to 14).
This is because the egg is produced, developed and released during this time, and self fertility massage can help direct regular supply of oxygenated blood and even distribution of hormone towards the reproductive area.
Women who are not trying to conceive but are only preparing their body can engage in self fertility massage anytime during the menstrual cycle EXCEPT during the menstruation.

Femoral Fertility Massage TechniqueThis type of massage increases the blood flow to the pelvic organ providing extra nourishment to the uterus and ovaries
Massage of the femoral artery around the pelvic region is completely natural and is a technique that women can use without any external aid to boost their fertility and handle their menstrual cycles better.

    2ND MASSAGE CALLED "FEMORAL"

    1. Press down on the area between your thigh and your lower abdomen around your pelvic region with your both thumbs as shown above
    2. Cover the area with the tips of the fingers and hold down with fairly heavy pressure to cease the blood flow in 30 – 40 seconds.
    3. The pressure increases and forces the blood back into the pelvic region nourishing the organs.
    4. Then in Releasing your fingers (pressure) you will feel a warm sensation run down your legs to the extremities.
    5. Repeat on the opposite side.
    6. Perform the massage three times on each side, twice a day, from when your period finishes and up to ovulation.

    12. Meditate on healing & fruitfulness scriptures. Always stay positive and learn to relax mentally!

I hope I provided enough free resources to defeat PCOS. Feel free to leave a comment below and send me a message.

FERTILITY FOODS BUILD UTERINE LINING IMPLANTATION AVOID MISCARRIAGE FERTILITY MASSAGE

I had a request to post on fertility friendly foods and give a list. This is very detailed so please read thoroughly. Fertility friendly foods are basically foods to help increase your chances of conceiving while eating healthy at the same time. Most healthy foods are already fertility friendly so try not to stress yourself about what foods to eat.

1.The first step would be eliminating bad foods from your diet, sodas, junk, sugary foods and fast foods. An occasional fast food is certainly fine. My first step towards stopping cysts from growing was saying goodbye to cow's milk. I no longer drink cows milk and only drink nut milk. Almond milk, coconut milk etc. The sooner you get used to eating fertility friendly foods the easier it would be once you get pregnant.

    2. Water: Drink alkaline water. Alkaline water has a higher pH level than regular drinking water. Because of this, some advocates of alkaline water believe it can neutralize the acid in your body. The more alkaline your body & foods are the less disease you have. And also easier to conceive.

The easiest way to alkaline your water is with lime. Purchase spring water or buy filtered pur jug and squeeze in a whole lime cut up(the juices in a gallon) I prefer lime but you can certainly use lemon. If using lime or lemons use preferably key lime with seeds or lemon with seeds. So squeeze the lime/lemon in a bowl remove seeds and then add to your gallon of water.

    3. Cleansing: It is very essential to cleanse and detox your body especially liver/kidney to filter out any excess hormones. Why is it important to cleanse?  The Liver is important in reproduction largely because of its role in menstruation. During the premenstrual period the Liver shifts the Blood flow from other body parts to the Uterus.

Blockage in the Liver system is a most eloquent description of why pre-menstrual tension and its associated symptoms occur. At this time any Liver obstruction will cause Qi and blood to "back up" or stagnate. When the Liver system is not functioning smoothly, the hormonal system is not either. The Uterus itself can become a toxic environment, hostile to implantation. Excess estrogen is not metabolized effectively and can build up, because it is the liver that metabolizes hormones. Estrogen dominance is implicated in conditions like endometriosis, fibroids, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and cancer. Most women with these diseases are diagnosed with an element of Liver  stagnation. When the Qi/Emotions and blood are blocked and not flowing smoothly symptoms such as endometriosis, blocked tubes, blood clots, premenstrual cramping and pain, and irregular menses can occur.
Now the question is how are your emotions? I will cover how emotions affect menstruation, reproductive cycle and fertility later on.

    CLEANSING JUICE:
Organic Celery, Organic cranberry/pomegranate, Organic apple, Organic Carrots, 1/2 cup of pineapple and Ginger. Juice and drink

    CLEANSING TEA:
Organic Dandelion, Nettle, Raspberry Leaf(This will also tone your uterus), Burdock, Ginger(fresh if possible), Dong Quai and Red Clover. Find those herbs or single herb tea from vitacost add each tea bag to teapot with water and dilute with 16 oz of hot water and drink. Or purchase herbs from mountain rose herbs add 1/2 teaspoon of each herb to hot water, allow to steep for 20 minutes and drink. Or purchase the women's herb tea blend from here

BACTERIA FIGHTING HERBS: These herbs are essential to help remove any bacteria blocking the fallopian tubes and causing inflammation especially with cysts/fibroids/endometriosis.
Calendula, Cinnamon Stick, Oregano, Ginger and Echinacea. Make a tea with 1-2 of  these and drink daily.

    CLEANSING VEGETABLE SOUP:
Burdock Root(Most Chinese grocery stores sell burdock root it looks like cassava. Peel and cut up like potatoes. I would start small 1/2  a cup in soups at first. Don't go overboard with this), Organic Celery, 1/2 cup of quinoa, Onions, ginger, 2 tablespoon of dandelion leaves (also in most Asian or Chinese grocery stores) and wild salmon/oysters(add this for the men high in zinc and increases sperm count).

So take about 7 days taking the juice, tea and soup. Ensure you are drinking lots of water(lime/lemon in it) during these 7 days to help flush out toxing through your urination. You will find you are urinating more and that is fine.

Smoothie: Banana, blueberries, Pineapple Core - The core is the center of the pineapple, almond milk and a little ginger. Or Fresh juice with organic carrots, pineapples, ginger, apples and English cucumbers.
Dinner: Pasta topped with tomato sauce/any good sauce or herbs and serve with steamed stir fried (broccoli, kale, cauliflower, mustard greens or turnip greens) . Fufu made with (brown rice flour, teff flour, quinoa flour, kamut, spelt or dark rye) also called dumplings in Jamaican. Eat with lots of kale/mustard/turnip greens cooked with onions, touch of habanero, 1-2 tablespoon of palm oil/grapeseed oil add your choice of meat - fish/turkey/chicken/goat/lamb. You want your fufu to be about 1 cup and 3-4 cups of veggies with protein. Substitute fufu for spelt pasta/whole grain pasta/boiled or baked plantains.

Other Lunch/Dinner Samples: Spaghetti squash with pesto, mushrooms and onions, and a baked parmesan+nut crusted chicken, Baked salmon with quinoa and roasted asparagus. Acorn squash stuffed with quinoa and veggies, and a side of  baked chicken or fish.

    Cycle Days 1-13

In addition to eating healthy foods, concentrate on these below during cycle day 1-13 first half of your cycle.

    • 6oz pomegranate juice mixed with 4oz spring water with lemon/lime: 1x/day, usually with dinner
    • 6oz red raspberry leaf tea/ bacteria fighting tea/womens tea: 2x/day, mid-morning and mid-afternoon (this keeps me from grabbing a coffee during these times of day. It’s just a warm, cozy, herbal tea. I sweeten with local honey or agave nectar). Rotate between those teas on cycle 1-13. Cycle day 1 is when your period starts.
    • Eat Yam African or Caribbean yams.  yams should only be eaten in the first half of the menstrual cycle, from menstruation until ovulation.  After ovulation, don’t eat lots of yams.  wild yam taken in the first two weeks of a menstrual cycle improves fertility by converting diosgenin into two other hormones essential for ovulation, luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone.
    • Add cinnamon to hot cereals especially for those with pcos or cysts.

Do a fertility massage is after the menstrual phase till ovulation phase (From day 6 to 14).

    Cycle Days 13-30

          * 10oz fresh  juice  organic carrots, ginger, 1 cup  Pineapple Core - The core is the center of the pineapple not the outer part, and apples 1x/day, usually with lunch or dinner

    Entire Cycle/Daily

    • 400iu Vitamin E: 1x/day, mid-morning
    • Vitamin B Complex: 1x/day, mid-morning
    • Folic acid once a day

    FYI ON PINEAPPLES FOR IMPLANTATION:
Eat the "Center thick middle part" and not the flesh around it.

If you are taking baby aspirin, a blood thinner, remember that pineapple is also a mild blood thinner and too much could lead to miscarriage. Ask your doctor before taking both.

  • Don’t start eating pineapple until after ovulation as it can actually inhibit pregnancy if taken too early as the acidity of pineapple can effect cervical mucous.
  • Cut up a whole pineapple, cut the CORE "CENTER MIDDLE PART" into 5 pieces and eat once piece daily starting the day after ovulation/IUI/IVF transfer.
  • If you don’t have a fresh core, eat one cup of pineapple meat a day once a day starting the day after ovulation/IUI/IVF transfer.
  • Canned pineapple has been heated which destroys the Bromelain so you have to eat fresh pineapple
  • Stop eating pineapple after a positive pregnancy test.

  • Supplements:
While I'm not a fan of supplements. I would recommend taking just vitamin e, vitamin b complex and  folic acid. This can be taken by both the men/women. I avoid taking vitamins because I find my body doesn't really break down the iron so I just take those supplements and ensure I eat lots of healthy foods. L-Arginine is another supplement which may help improve fertility by increasing the production of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide dilates blood vessels and helps to increase blood flow to the uterus, ovaries, and genitals. Men or women.

    Safe Sex Lubricant:
Easiest way is drinking lots of water or grapefruit juice! Yes! lol it works 1 cup daily and you will be swimming in cervical mucus. Why is cervical mucus necessary? It helps the sperm travel from the vagina to the uterus, fallopian tube to meet with the egg. The more alkaline your CM(Cervical mucus is the more easier for conception), citrus fruits - lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, green veggies and less dairy/cow meat/sugar & processed foods. Avoid grapefruit if on any blood thinner or any medication that can interfere with it.

I would stay away from ky jelly or oils if you are dry down there and it hurts. I find foreplay helps and also using sperm friendly lubricants such as; pre seed, samsar conceive plus, yes baby lubricant. Any of those will help you feeling not so tight and ph water based. I do use pre seed when I feel dry but any of those listed works.

If you think your cervical mucus is too thick, expectorant cough medicine can help make it thinner. Your choice of syrup will depend on where you live, but make sure the active ingredient is guaifenesin (ask at your local pharmacy or online). Use it only during the last few days 3 days before ovulation, and do not take more than the recommended daily dose indicated on the package.

    TIPS TO AVOID MISCARRIAGE:
Doing all listed above helps with miscarriage. Also Herbs or  supplement below can help. Select one herb or supplement at a time. Consult with a physician before using.

    Vitex
Vitex (Chaste Tree berry) has been traditionally used by midwives and herbalists in the first trimester of pregnancy to prevent miscarriage associated with low progesterone due to corpus luteum insufficiency. It can also be used in conjunction with progesterone cream.
While Vitex can be used to help with a threatened miscarriage due to low progesterone levels, it is best to begin taking it at least 3 months prior to conception. Also, we feel it is best to consider progesterone cream use to help maintain stable progesterone levels once pregnancy has occurred. Working with a healthcare practitioner once you are pregnant to help you keep your progesterone levels up is the wisest option at that point. Should you desire to continue using Vitex into pregnancy, please only do so under the supervised care of a skilled herbalist or midwife trained in herbal medicine.

    Cramp Bark (Viburnum opulus)
Used traditionally as a preventative for recurrent miscarriage, this herb has been shown to reduce spasm of the uterine muscles and ovaries. Cramp bark works to relieve uterine irritation, relax the muscles, with specific action on the uterus. This herb slowly relaxes the nervous system as well. This combination of actions may help prevent miscarriage in women with a history of miscarriage.
A teaspoon with 2 cups of hot water, steep remove herbs and drink.

Low progesterone during pregnancy may be a common cause of recurrent miscarriages. Progesterone is responsible for creating a healthy environment in the womb by creating and maintaining a healthy uterine lining. It also may reduce the chances of blood clots and immune system responses to the fetus as a foreign substance. It is the pregnancy hormone.
If you feel this might be your situation try to get your hormone levels tested before using progesterone cream, then get tested again to make sure your levels are high enough.

Maca is a nourishing food for the endocrine system, aiding the pituitary, adrenal, and thyroid glands (all involved in hormonal balance.) Maca has the ability to affect key hormones in both women and men without containing hormones itself.

Could you be zinc or vitamin e deficient?
Zinc and vitamin e is the most important mineral for the reproductive system when you want to prevent miscarriage. Zinc deficiency among many other things, impairs body’s ability to properly maintain pregnancy in women and produce healthy sperm in men.

    DO A FERTILITY/WOMENS MASSAGE:

It should be practiced by all women not just those trying to conceive. Especially for those with fibroids, pcos, cysts and endometriosis.

Before commencing any of the massages, make sure your bladder is empty (you don’t feel like urinating)Also if you are eating before the massage, eat light meal and use a light oil for massage.

Regularly receiving fertility massage provides many benefits for the reproductive system. Some of the benefits are:

    • Helps to reposition a tilted uterus
    • Promotes hormonal balance and helps with blocked fallopian tubes
    • Massage helps to break up scar tissue
    • Helps to bring fresh blood to the uterus
    • Helps to reduce stress & stress hormones
    • Increases circulation to the uterus & cervix
    • Improves endocrine system communication
    • Encourages the liver to get rid of excess hormones
    • Promotes hormonal balance by strengthening the hormonal feedback loop
    • Helps the body to rid itself of old stagnant blood, clots and tissues

Is a fertility massage right for you? if you answer yes to any of the below then yes.

Are you experiencing any of the following?
    PCOS
    Endometriosis
    Blocked Fallopian Tubes

    Anovulation
    Excessive Mensuration
    Constipation
    Pain during ovulation
    Tilted uterus
    Scar tissue
    Gas

This is how your reproductive system looks like so light massage those areas

SEE BELOW ON AREAS TO DO MASSAGE WHERE THE ENTIRE HANDS ARE SHOWING

    Femoral Fertility Massage Technique

This type of massage increases the blood flow to the pelvic organ providing extra nourishment to the uterus and ovaries
Massage of the femoral artery around the pelvic region is completely natural and is a technique that women can use without any external aid to boost their fertility and handle their menstrual cycles better.

I hope I provided enough free resources to boost your chance of fertility. Feel free to leave a comment below and send me a message.

Natural Ways to deal with heavy bleeding Fibroids Fertility Infertility PMS Build Uterine Lining

The herbs below not only address heavy bleeding but also builds uterine lining which is necessary for implantation. I used to bleed heavily until I changed my diet and started incorporating the herbs below as a tea. Heavy bleeding is most always linked to fibroids. So what causes heavy bleeding during menstrual cycle? Hormonal imbalance (estrogen or progesterone), blood thinners, pelvic inflammatory disease, Polyps or fibroids are usually the cause for heavy bleeding. And mostly common in African Americans. In literary terms it is called "menorrhagia".  Needing a new pad every half-hour to an hour is not normal, passing large clots and a period lasting more than 7 days. The amount of blood that a woman loses should be one that is manageable with most of today’s hygiene products.

There are medications given to help with heavy bleeding. I strongly believe those with heavy bleeding should control their high levels of estrogen and stay away from estrogenic foods. The question is are you high in estrogen - do you have hair underneath your chin always? I am not a fan of medications so the herbs to help are below:

    Wild Yam:
I actually eat the wild yam which is sold in Caribbean or Mexican store in the usa. Grown in Mexico, Caribbean and Africa. The wild yam itself when cooked looks like potato.
Wild yam root is a potent source of diosgenin, a chemical that resembles female sex hormones and was used in the manufacture of the first oral contraceptives. It supports healthy menstrual cycles by lessening pain and cramping. Wild yam's diosgenin, is a precursor in the chemical synthesis of progesterone, a hormone whose numerous functions include uterine health and warding off PMS.

    Raspberry Leaf
This leaf is great for uterine cramps, It's astringent properties stop excessive bleeding and recommended during pregnancy to tone the uterus.

    Ladys Mantle:
In herbalism, lady's mantle is commonly used to prevent and treat menstrual cramps, excessive menstrual bleeding, endometriosis, and uterine fibroids. Proponents of herbal and folk remedies may also recommend lady's mantle tea for muscle spasms, diarrhea, nausea and certain gastrointestinal disorders.
    Sage:
Yes the same sage you cook with for turkey is wonderful for heavy menstrual bleeding and hot flashes.

    Burdock:
Burdock helps to cleanse the body from the inside out and is myost useful in those conditions that can be traced back to liver disorders or a general overload of toxins in the system. The liver and kidneys control the hormone system. So it is essential to treat the kidney and liver also.

    Dandelion:
It is great for the liver - the major organ that helps rid the body of toxins and excess hormones. it also benefits the female reproductive system by helping to regulate and normalize hormone production.

    Juicing:
There are so many great benefits to juicing and you should incorporate them into your daily life. That means no sodas, white starches, junk foods and fast foods.

More veggies like - amaranth, avocado, okra, lettuce, onions, watercress, zucchini, squash, olives, mushrooms except shitake, turnip greens, kale, bell peppers, cucumbers, ginger.

Fruits: Apples, bananas, cherries, Soursop also called guanabana(highly recommended), tamarind, pear, peach, prickly pear, plums, papaya, prunes, raisins, dates, berries no cranberries, figs, limes, mango, melons, orange - sevile or sour is best and currants.

Grains/flours/bread  - hempseed, kamut, rye, spelt, tef, amaranth, fonio, wild rice

Nuts/Seeds - Hempseed, raw sesame, walnuts,  Brazilian nuts

Oils - Grapeseed oil, Sesame, Avocado, Hempseed oil.

Sweetener - Agave syrup and date sugar

DIY HERBAL TEA BLEND FOR HEAVY BLEEDING/FIBROIDS/HORMONE BALANCE

    1 teaspoon raspberry leaf
    1/2 teaspoon lady's mantle
    1/2 teaspoon burdock
    1 teaspoon dandelion
    1 stick cinnamon
    1/2 teaspoon fresh ginger

Boil hot water, use 4 cups of hot water pour in the ingredients. Then cover in a pot.  Let it steep for at least 5 minutes. Sieve the herbs and drink. You can keep the tea in a clean glass bottle with cap(I love the ones Ikea sells for like $5), sweeten with agave nectar and drink. Drink a week before your period and during your period.

If you try this blend and it works for you please leave a comment. I would love to hear from you. This blend is also great for infertility as the herbs will tone the uterus and cleanse kidney/liver.

    Happy Drinking!

Health Benefits of Argula and a great fertility herb food

I've always heard about argula and how it is so good for you. I really have no excuse why I disliked it in the past so I guess this is argula season. I picked up some from Trader Joe's and I have been addicted to it ever since. Arugula is rich in vitamins A, C, E and K, and various B vitamins such as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B-6, and pantothenic acid. The leaves contain plenty of minerals, especially copper and iron. It also has trace amounts of some other essential minerals and electrolytes such as calcium, iron, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, and zinc.

Arugula is  known by other names such as salad rocket, garden rocket, roquette, rucola, rugula or colewort.  The scientific name of arugula is Eruca sativa.
Argula is said to have cancer power properties like broccoli and cauliflower. It is high in fibre and antioxidants studies show may reduce the risk of developing lung, prostate, breast, and pancreatic cancer.
Argula is rich in chlorophyll, so to get the most chlorophyll in arugula, it is best to eat it raw. The large amounts of chlorophyll, also known as “liquid sunshine” helps cleanses the blood, detoxifies cells, heals disease in the body and boosts oxygen. It contains indole-3-carbinol and isothiocyanates which have been shown to suppress the production inflammation in the body.
Arugula is high in most B vitamins but contains especially high amounts of folate. Awesome for those early pregnancy months and good for those trying to conceive. Fresh arugula is an excellent source of folate and when consumed by a woman during the time of conception and throughout pregnancy, may help prevent neural tube defects in the newborn child. Please Note:
Arugula is relatively lower in oxalate content than that in spinach, purslane, mustard greens, celery, etc. The greens can be safely used during pregnancy and lactation. As always consult your physician*

Studies show those who eat arugula on a regular basis are found to have more sexual drive and energy. Arugula also contains high levels of iron and copper, making it a strong substitute or addition to spinach in your diet.

Natural Aphrosidiac Herbs to Boost Libido, Erectile Dysfunction, Menopause, Infertility and Fertility

We have been blessed with natural herbs on the earth for any type of ailment or to calm the nerves. Aphrodisiac herbs nourish the nervous, heart, and reproductive systems on both physical and energetic levels. Physically, they tonify the body and support balanced function, enhance physical desire (libido), and improve performance. Energetically, they balance and love up the heart and sacral chakras and increase pleasure.

Yohimbe: The yohimbe tree is a tall evergreen that is native to western Africa. The bark of the tree contains a chemical called yohimbine. Yohimbe bark has traditionally been used in Africa as an aphrodisiac (to increase sexual desire). Currently it is used as a folk or traditional remedy for sexual dysfunction, including erectile dysfunction in men.
Yohimbe was approved by the US FDA as the first plant-derived drug for treating impotency (Kotta et al., 2013). Its primary action is to dilate blood vessels, thus regulating and stimulating blood flow to the sexual organs. Yohimbe can also increase sex drive in women.

SIDEEFFECTS: People should not combine yohimbe with monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors as effects may be additive. Yohimbe should be used with caution when taken with medicines for high blood pressure, tricyclic antidepressants, or phenothiazines. People with kidney problems and people with psychiatric conditions should not use yohimbe. Yohimbe has been associated with high blood pressure, increased heart rate, headache, anxiety, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, tremors, and sleeplessness. Yohimbe can be dangerous if taken in large doses or for long periods of time.

Maca:  Maca is often termed as Peruvian Ginseng due to its natural stimulating qualities that are similar to the benefits found in the commonly known ginseng-related herbs. Medicinally, the part of the maca that holds the active nutrients is the flesh of its root. The nutritional contents of the maca root are impressive. The root or tuber is high in protein, natural sugars, iron, potassium, iodine, magnesium, calcium, and fiber. Due to maca’s high nutritional content, it is often referred to as having “superfood” properties.
Culturally, the ancient Peruvians ingested this powerful root to boost the potency of the male libido. Its natural properties help to create an aphrodisiac-like response in men who have suffered from impotency, low sex-drive, and fertility problems. The maca root is known to improve the quality and quantity of sperm in men who have lower than normal sperm counts, which helps to increase the level of fertility.
One of the most troublesome symptoms of menopause is hot flashes. The active ingredients in the maca root appear to lessen the severity and frequency of hot flashes that occur due to hormonal changes in a woman’s body as they reach middle age. Maca root helps to bring back into balance the body’s natural hormone levels without the use of synthetic hormone replacements that are typical treatments for menopausal symptoms.

Side Effects: Avoid use if you tend to have high estrogen, endometriosis and fibroids. Maca is best suited for men in my opinion.

Panax Ginseng: In traditional Chinese medicine, Panax ginseng is used as a sexual stimulant due to its antioxidant action (Kotta et al., 2013) as well as its ability to increase testosterone, supply blood to the sexual organs, and increase sexual function, potency, and sperm count.

Ginger: Its long reputation as an aphrodisiac is earned by its ability to stimulate circulation to the pelvic area, enhancing sexual vitality. Ginger is a fiery, warming herb that stimulates circulation and energy, enhancing the “fire” in the body that invigorates the reproductive system for men and women, treating impotence due to lack of vital heat in the body (Gladstar, 2001).

Rose: Roses are used to heal and open the energetic heart chakra, yielding a soft but strong heart that is open yet protected.  Best way is to spray rose water mist around the home especially before intercourse.

     Libido Energizing Tea

    Ingredients
    1 tablespoon peeled ginger
    1 tablespoon yohimbe bark
1/2 teaspoon of panax ginseng or American ginseng
    1 teaspoon of rosehips
1 stick cinnamon or 1 tablespoon of cinnamon chips
    Directions
    • Blend herbs together in jar.
    • Use 1 tablespoon per 8 oz boiling water, let steep 10 minutes, strain and sweeten with honey to taste.
    For women avoid the yohimbe.

Pre-Conception and Fertility Nutrition by Marie Olson NTP

I love the springtime.  To me, it’s such a time of renewal and rebirth.  That’s when all the animals and plants seem to come back to life after the long, cold winter season.  I always think of baby bunnies hopping around the yard and their prolific fertility.

Speaking of fertility…when we as Americans think of fertility and preparation for having babies, how many of us think about diet? Most people know that age-old advice that as an expecting woman, one is “eating for two.” But what is being eaten? Is it wholesome, nutrient-dense food? Or merely an increase in calories and/or quantity of our day-to-day diet? Is that the healthiest choice?

Many of you have probably heard about the SAD diet in America; SAD being an acronym for the Standard American Diet.  The Standard American Diet is the diet touted by the US Government as being the best nutrition we can eat. The US Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggest 45-65% of our calories should come from carbohydrates, while 20-35% should come from fat and 10-35% should come from protein.  Well, I teach Nutrition, and to me, those numbers are not very pro-health.  If you look at traditional diets, and the diets of typical Americans before the advent of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans in the 1970s, we ate far fewer calories from carbohydrates.

As a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, I typically urge clients to aim for a 40-30-30 ratio when eating; that is, 40% carbohydrates, 30% fats and 30% protein.  30% fat? Isn’t that a lot?  I can hear the questions now…the quick answer is, not really.  Think about the fact that for every gram of fat you consume, it has about 9 calories, so you need a lot less fat by weight than you do of protein or carbohydrates, which only have about 4 calories per gram.  So what that means, is that a half-pound of butter (1 stick or 8 oz, or 226.8 grams) will be a little over twice as many calories (2041.2) as half a pound of protein or carbohydrates (907.2 calories).  And who eats an entire stick of butter in one sitting, anyway?  In other words, eating the same amount of fat by weight makes more calories.  Make sense? That means that if we’re eating a ratio of 30-30-40, we need a lot less fat than you think to achieve that based on calories; it’s actually quite a balanced way to set up your plate and achieve an optimal amount of fat in your diet.

Why are fats so important, anyway? Fat is key to developing healthy hormones.  In fact, every cell membrane is made up of fat! Fat is essential.  It ensures we are absorbing our fat-soluble vitamins: A, D, E and K.  Fat is required for proper protein absorption, and also serves as protection for our organs (think “padding”).  Ever run into something with your knee (no padding from fat)? It really hurt, right? What about your hip, where most of us have a little more padding? Not as bad? Fat also helps slow the absorption of food and make us feel full longer.

When was the last time you had a meal without fat (usually cold cereal for breakfast comes to mind) – chances are you were starving a couple of hours later, right? What about if you had bacon and eggs for breakfast? You were probably good to go until lunch, right? Plus, fat just makes food taste better! This whole low-fat, no-fat mantra we’ve all been hearing for years is not only wrong, but dangerous.  Ever known anyone that ate a low-fat diet and had problems conceiving? I’ve known many.  When I see clients, that is one of the first things I ask them – what’s your fat intake like? And what types of fats are you eating? Because both of those questions are very important to determine if they are getting what their body needs to support life.  Fat-free and low-fat foods have the fat removed (along with the flavor it provides) and have to make up for that with other things – usually fillers, sugar and/or salt.  Wouldn’t it just be better to get the flavor from the fat that was there to begin with? I think so! Stop buying fat-free and low-fat yogurt and stick with the whole milk version – it tastes better, has fewer additives, and will sustain you for longer, too!

There are three types of fats: saturated, the most stable of all the fats, which is found in animal products and tropical oils; your body can make this from carbohydrates; monounsaturated fat, also relatively stable, which is found predominately in nut oils like almonds, pecans, cashews and other sources like olive oil and avocado oil; the body can make this from saturated fats; and finally, polyunsaturated fat.  This is considered an unstable fat, and should never be heated or used for cooking.  Think of using this as a finishing oil to use AFTER something is cooked, just to give it some flavor.  It can also be used in cold applications like salad dressing.  Polyunsaturated fats are found in flax seed oil, some nuts, fish and seed oils.

There are two types of fats that are essential, which means we MUST get them from our diet, because our body cannot make them on its own.  They are linoleic acid (aka omega-6) and alpha linolenic acid (aka omega-3).  As I’m sure you’ve heard, salmon is a great source of omega-3 fatty acid, as are sardines and other oily fish.  Especially in pre-conception and during pregnancy, walnut oil, wheat germ and hemp are also good sources.  Omega-6 fatty acids can be found in sunflower and sesame oil; again, these are the best sources during pre-conception and pregnancy.  Most people get plenty of omega-6 fats in their diet, but are often lacking enough omega-3 fats.  In fact, most people are around 24:1 omega-6:omega-3, and should be more like 3:1 or even 1:1 for a better ratio.

Getting back to nutrition and preparing for children…did you know that so called “primitive” cultures often had a pre-conception fertility diet to ensure healthy mother and offspring? Some started 6 months before marriage (assuming that conception would start shortly after), while others started 6 months before conception.  Typically these cultures would increase the vitamins, minerals, fats and organ meats in the diet for both the mother and father in preparation of children.  Not only that, but the special diet would continue through pregnancy and even after, to provide satisfactory nutrition to the baby while nursing.  These “special foods” were set aside specifically for those in the group/tribe that were preparing to conceive, because they were known to be the best sources of nutrients for a healthy pregnancy and baby.

Here in the United States, we really don’t get much guidance when it comes to pre-conception nutrition.  Usually, it starts when we’ve already conceived:  “Limit your caffeine. Give up smoking. Stop drinking alcohol. Take pre-natal vitamins.” Yes, that is all good advice; and yes, it is best to start that as soon as possible, even before conception.  But does that advice constitute good nutrition?

Here’s what I would love to see instead: eat three to five meals a day, with a good combination of fats, protein and carbohydrates at each meal.  They don’t have to be big meals; eating consistently throughout the day will help balance blood sugar, alleviate cravings and give one steady energy.  This is especially important for anyone dealing with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), because low-fat, high-carbohydrate diets are associated with a higher risk of developing PCOS.

Make sure you’re getting the best nutrition you can afford; ideally, aim for locally grown, organic foods.  If you can only afford to buy one thing organic, invest in organic butter.  I really like Kerry Gold Butter, which is cultured butter from grass-fed cows, high in fat-soluble vitamins thanks to the fresh grass and sunlight.  Toxins are stored in the fats of animals (and humans are an animal, too!), so getting the best sources of fat you can is crucial for a few reasons.  Toxins may be released into the placenta during pregnancy, and into the baby, especially if someone experiences significant weight loss during pregnancy (think: morning sickness).  This is also the case prior to pregnancy – since toxins are released when one loses weight, and if one loses significant weight, those toxins will be released into the blood stream.  If the body is not properly detoxified, those toxins can be reabsorbed into the body and wreak havoc in different body systems.

Get enough sleep! Pregnancy can take a toll on your body, and you won’t get much after baby arrives, so soak it up while you can! This will allow your body time to repair and recover, and you’ll have more energy to get things done the next day, too.  While eating a varied diet can certainly help ensure you have the vitamins and minerals you need, getting a good multi-vitamin certainly doesn’t hurt.  Some good choices that are bio-available forms are Metabolic Maintenance’s FemOne or Vital Nutrients Prenatal.

Even better, join a local pre-conception support group! I am very excited to offer the Feed Your Fertile Body!TM Program just for such support! In this class, which is designed for either couples or singles, you will get step by step recommendations on what to do to prepare for welcoming a baby into your family.  There are pantry clean-outs with recommended swaps, and we even get to try new foods in the group.  I look forward to working with you to address your nutrition needs.
