BABY KIDS COLD AWAY BALM RECIPE

I have had a few requests to give a balm recipe that is safe for babies and kids during the fall winter months. Not all essential oils are safe for kids so I will give a little run down on safe oils and little bit on essential oils before the balm recipe.

Which Essential Oils are Safe for Babies?

For infants, zero to two months of age:

Chamomile, Roman and German
Lavender

For babies, two to six months of age:

The above, plus Calendula, Frankincense, Mandarin and Neroli.

For babies, six to twelve months of age:

The above plus Bergamot(Make sure it is Bergeptane free), Eucalyptus Smithii, Jasmine, Rose Geranium, Rose, Grapefruit, and Tea Tree.
(A few others are also recommended for these ages, but none that I have used myself.)

What to look for in an Essential Oil

It is important to get the best quality oil possible. Make sure it is 100% pure essential oil and not a massage or perfume oil. Young Living, Aura Cacia and Ananda Apothecary is where I get most of my essential oils.

Cautions

It is very important to use caution when beginning to use essential oils with a baby. Essential oils are very strong, so be sure to use a light hand; only one or two drops need to be mixed with water for diffusing or oil for massage.
A few points to remember:
  • Do not place undiluted essential oil close to baby's face. If your child has very sensitive skin, it is important to test a small area before using a new single oil or blend.
  • Never used undiluted essential oil directly on baby’s skin (it can burn and cause irritation).
  • Never use undiluted essential oil in a diffuser (the scent will be too strong).
  • Never ingest an essential oil. When your child is taking medications, reduce the amount of essential oil by half the amount recommended for their age group.
General dilution rate guidelines of essential oils in one ounce of carrier oil:
Age of Child                       Dilution Rate of Essential Oil to One Ounce Carrier Oil
Newborn (Consult primary                            1-3 drops essential oil / ounce
  Care physician before use)
2-6 months                                                     1-3 drops essential oil / ounce
6-12 months                                                   1-4 drops essential oil / ounce
1-4 years (unless very small)                           5-8 drops essential oil / ounce
6-7 years                                                         5-10 drops essential oil / ounce
9-12 years                                                       5-12 drops essential oil / ounce
12 years to young adult                                 10-15 drops essential oil / ounce

When in doubt, don't. It's better to be safe than sorry. Test remedies containing essential oils on a small area of skin to see if any reaction may occur.

Okay so now we have the basics the  Recipe is below:

Ingredients:
1 oz Beeswax
1 C Organic Olive Oil
3 drops each Lavender, Frankincense and Eucalyptus Smithii Essential Oils

Directions:
Sterilize all containers with plain vinegar or diluted bleach water before using.
Melt the beeswax and the coconut oil using a double boiler method over medium heat until combined.

Remove from heat, let cool a little and add essential oils. Pour the mixture into the glass bail jars. If you are using plastic jars, be aware of your mixture’s temperature before pouring. Because of Beeswax’s high melting point, in order for it to remain liquid and pourable the mixture may be at too hot to pour into some plastics.

You can purchase all the supplies at Mountain Rose herbs. Do not have time to make this balm? Then feel free to purchase it here
